When it comes to camping, there’s nothing like starting your day with a steaming cup of coffee. But how do you achieve that perfect brew in the great outdoors? Fear not, fellow coffee aficionado!
Some top recommendations for the best camping coffee maker include the AeroPress, the French press, and portable pour-over coffee makers like the GSI Outdoors JavaDrip or the Hario V60.
In this article, I will explore the top recommendations for the best camping coffee makers, ensuring you never have to sacrifice your love for java, even in the wilderness.
1. The AeroPress: A Portable Powerhouse
First on our list of recommended camping coffee makers is the beloved AeroPress. This compact and versatile coffee maker has garnered a dedicated following among camping enthusiasts for good reason. With its unique brewing method, it consistently delivers a smooth and flavorful cup of coffee in just a matter of minutes, ensuring you can enjoy a quality brew even in the wilderness.
The AeroPress is designed with portability in mind. It is lightweight, compact, and easily fits into any camping gear or backpack. Its dimensions make it convenient to carry, and its durable construction ensures it can withstand the rigors of outdoor adventures.
Whether you’re embarking on a weekend camping trip or a multi-day hiking expedition, the AeroPress is a reliable and compact companion that won’t weigh you down.
One of the key factors that set AeroPress apart is its brewing method. Unlike traditional coffee makers, AeroPress uses a combination of immersion and pressure to extract the flavors from the coffee grounds.
This process allows for a shorter brewing time while still producing a rich and robust cup of coffee. The result is a smooth, clean, and well-balanced brew that impresses coffee connoisseurs and casual campers alike.
In addition to its exceptional brewing capabilities, the AeroPress is lauded for its ease of use and cleaning. The process is straightforward: add coffee grounds and hot water to the chamber, stir briefly, and then press the plunger to extract the coffee.
Its simplicity makes it accessible to both seasoned baristas and novice coffee enthusiasts. Moreover, cleaning the AeroPress is a breeze. Simply remove the cap, eject the coffee puck, and rinse the components with water. Its low-maintenance nature is particularly advantageous when camping, as you don’t want to spend precious time on elaborate cleaning routines.
Another noteworthy advantage of AeroPress is its independence from electricity. As a manual coffee maker, it doesn’t rely on power sources, making it an ideal choice for camping trips where electricity may not be available.
Whether you’re deep in the wilderness or enjoying a tranquil morning by the lake, all you need is hot water and your trusty AeroPress to savor a freshly brewed cup of coffee. This self-sufficiency adds to its appeal and ensures that you can enjoy your favorite coffee even in the most remote locations.
Camping enthusiasts who have experienced the AeroPress often praise its versatility. Apart from brewing regular coffee, it can be used to make espresso-style shots or even create customized coffee recipes.
With a little experimentation and creativity, you can adjust variables such as water temperature, brew time, and grind size to tailor your coffee to suit your taste preferences. This adaptability allows you to explore and refine your coffee brewing skills while immersing yourself in the beauty of nature.

2. French Press: The Classic Campfire Companion
Next on our list of recommended camping coffee makers is the tried-and-true French press, a timeless companion for coffee lovers in the great outdoors. With its simple yet effective design, the French press offers a classic brewing method that allows you to extract the full flavor potential from your coffee grounds, resulting in a rich and robust brew that satisfies even the most discerning taste buds.
One of the defining features of the French press is its durability, making it well-suited for camping adventures. Constructed with sturdy materials such as stainless steel or rugged plastic, the French press can withstand the demands of outdoor use. Whether it’s surviving bumps and knocks in your backpack or enduring the rigors of campfire cooking, this coffee maker is built to last. Its reliability and resilience have made it a beloved choice for campers who value long-lasting gear.
Brewing coffee with a French press is a straightforward process that doesn’t require any complex machinery or electricity. Simply add your desired amount of coarse coffee grounds to the carafe, pour in hot water (ideally just off boiling), and let the coffee steep for a few minutes to allow the flavors to develop. After the steeping time, press the plunger down slowly, separating the brewed coffee from the grounds. The mesh filter of the plunger ensures that the coffee oils and sediment are filtered out, resulting in a clean cup of coffee with a full-bodied taste.
The French press offers a level of control over the brewing process, allowing you to customize your coffee to your preferred strength and taste. The steeping time can be adjusted based on your preference for a lighter or bolder brew. Additionally, you can experiment with the coffee-to-water ratio to find the perfect balance that suits your palate. This versatility allows you to fine-tune your coffee brewing skills and create a personalized coffee experience even in nature.
One of the distinct pleasures of using a French press while camping is the rustic charm it brings to your coffee ritual. Picture yourself surrounded by nature’s beauty, sitting by the campfire or overlooking a serene lake, as you press down the plunger and witness the rich aroma of freshly brewed coffee filling the air. The French press embodies a sense of simplicity and connection to nature, making each cup a memorable experience that enhances outdoor adventures.
When it comes to cleaning the French press, it is a relatively easy task. After pouring out the coffee, simply disassemble the plunger and rinse the various components with water. The filter and mesh can be cleaned thoroughly to remove any coffee residue, ensuring that your next brew is fresh and free from lingering flavors. The simplicity of the French press not only applies to its brewing process but also its maintenance, making it a practical choice for camping trips where simplicity and convenience are valued.

Hi! I’m Shawn Chun
My adventure in coffee began when I first launched my first coffee shop back in the early 2000s. I had to figure out so many things on my own and to make it worse within 2 years of opening two large corporate coffee chains moved in just blocks away from me!
As I saw smaller and even some larger coffee shops in the neighborhood slowly lose customers to these giant coffee chains and slowly close up shop, I knew that I had to start getting creative…or go out of business.
I (like you may be) knew the coffee industry well. I could make the best latte art around and the foam on my caps was the fluffiest you have ever seen. I even had the best state-of-the-art 2 group digital Nuova Simonelli machine money could buy. But I knew that these things alone would not be enough to lure customers away from the name brand established coffee shops.
Eventually, through lots of trial and error as well as perseverance and creativity I did find a way to not only survive but also thrive in the coffee/espresso industry even while those corporate coffee chains stayed put. During those years I learned to adapt and always faced new challenges. It was not always easy, however, in the end, I was the sole survivor independent coffee shop within a 10-mile radius of my location. Just two corporate coffee chains and I were left after that year. All told the corporate coffee chains took down over 15 small independent coffee shops and kiosks and I was the last one standing and thriving.
Along the years I meet others with the same passion for coffee and I quickly learned that it is not only “how good a barista is” that makes a coffee shop successful, but the business side of coffee as well.
Hence why I started this website you are on now. To provide the tools and resources for up and coming coffee shop owners to gain that vital insight and knowledge on how to start a coffee shop successfully.
Stick around, browse through my helpful blog and resources and enjoy your stay! With lots of LATTE LOVE!
