No more separate grinding steps or compromising on the freshness of your coffee grounds.
The Breville BES870XL Barista Express is widely regarded as the best coffee maker with a built-in grinder, offering convenience and the ability to enjoy freshly ground coffee for an exceptional brewing experience.
In this article, I will embark on a journey to uncover the best coffee maker on the market that includes a built-in grinder.
Understanding the Importance of Freshly Ground Coffee
Freshly ground coffee is the key to unlocking the full potential of your brewing experience. When coffee beans are ground, they expose a larger surface area to oxygen, leading to oxidation and a rapid loss of flavor and aroma. This process occurs more quickly with pre-ground coffee, which is why it often falls short of delivering the vibrant taste that freshly ground coffee can offer.
By grinding coffee beans just before brewing, you preserve the delicate oils and aromatics locked within the beans. These oils contain essential compounds that contribute to the nuanced flavors and enticing aroma of coffee. When exposed to oxygen, these oils begin to dissipate, leading to a stale and lackluster brew.
Freshly ground coffee ensures that these oils and flavors are at their peak when they come into contact with hot water during the brewing process. This results in a more pronounced and well-rounded cup of coffee. The aromatic compounds released from freshly ground beans fill the air, tantalizing your senses and setting the stage for a truly enjoyable coffee experience.
Moreover, freshly ground coffee allows for greater control over the grind size, which is crucial for achieving optimal extraction. Different brewing methods, such as espresso, drip brewing, or French press, require specific grind sizes to extract the desired flavors. When you grind your coffee beans just before brewing, you have the flexibility to adjust the grind size to suit your preferred brewing method, ensuring optimal extraction and a balanced cup of coffee.
Additionally, grinding your coffee beans at home provides the opportunity to explore a wider range of coffee flavors and profiles. Coffee beans come in various origins, roasts, and blends, each offering distinct characteristics. By purchasing whole beans and grinding them yourself, you have the freedom to experiment with different coffee varieties and explore the nuances of flavor that each one offers.
The Advantages of Coffee Makers with Built-in Grinders
Investing in a coffee maker with a built-in grinder brings a multitude of advantages that enhance your coffee brewing experience. Firstly, it eliminates the need for a separate grinder, streamlining your coffee preparation routine and saving valuable time and countertop space. Instead of juggling multiple appliances, you have an all-in-one solution that combines the grinding and brewing processes seamlessly.
One of the standout features of coffee makers with built-in grinders is the ability to customize the grind settings. Different brewing methods, such as espresso, drip brewing, or French press, require specific grind coarseness to extract the optimal flavors from the coffee grounds. With a built-in grinder, you have the flexibility to adjust the grind settings to achieve the perfect coarseness that suits your preferred brewing method. This level of control ensures that you can tailor your coffee to your taste preferences, resulting in a consistently satisfying cup every time.
The convenience factor cannot be overlooked when it comes to coffee makers with built-in grinders. Many of these machines offer programmable settings, allowing you to set the grinder and brewing process to start automatically. Imagine waking up to the invigorating aroma of freshly ground coffee as the machine diligently prepares your favorite brew. This hands-off approach ensures that your mornings are stress-free and your coffee is ready when you need it, allowing you to kickstart your day with ease.
Furthermore, coffee makers with built-in grinders often come equipped with additional features that enhance the overall brewing experience. These may include options for controlling the strength of the coffee, temperature settings, or even specialty brewing functions like espresso shots or cappuccino preparation. These added functionalities allow you to explore different coffee styles and indulge in a variety of beverages, all from the comfort of your kitchen.
In addition to the practical benefits, coffee makers with built-in grinders also add an aesthetic appeal to your kitchen. These machines are often designed with sleek and modern aesthetics, complementing your countertop and adding a touch of elegance to your coffee brewing station. They seamlessly blend functionality with style, elevating the overall ambiance of your kitchen space.
Factors to Consider When Choosing a Coffee Maker with Built-in Grinder
Choosing the perfect coffee maker with a built-in grinder involves careful consideration of several key factors. By evaluating the grinder type, brewing capacity, programmable features, ease of use and cleaning, and overall durability, you can make an informed decision that aligns with your specific needs and preferences.
Firstly, the type of grinder in the coffee maker is crucial. There are two main types: blade grinders and burr grinders. Blade grinders use spinning blades to chop the coffee beans, while burr grinders crush them between two abrasive surfaces. Burr grinders are generally preferred as they provide a more consistent grind size, resulting in better flavor extraction. Therefore, selecting a coffee maker with a burr grinder can significantly enhance your brewing experience.
Next, consider the brewing capacity that suits your needs. Coffee makers with built-in grinders are available in various sizes, ranging from single-serve options to models capable of brewing multiple cups at once. Assess your daily coffee consumption and determine whether a smaller or larger brewing capacity is more suitable for your lifestyle.
Programmable features offer added convenience and customization options. Look for coffee makers that allow you to adjust parameters such as grind size, brew strength, and brewing time. Some machines even offer pre-programmed settings for different coffee types, giving you the flexibility to personalize your coffee experience with ease.
Ease of use and cleaning are essential factors to consider. Look for intuitive controls, clear instructions, and user-friendly interfaces that simplify the brewing process. Additionally, coffee makers with removable parts and dishwasher-safe components make cleaning a breeze, ensuring a hygienic and hassle-free experience.
Durability is another crucial aspect to evaluate. Investing in a coffee maker with a built-in grinder is a long-term commitment, so it’s essential to choose a machine that is built to last. Read reviews, consider the materials used, and look for models with a reputation for reliability and durability.
By carefully considering these factors, you can narrow down your options and find the best coffee maker with a built-in grinder that meets your requirements. Remember to prioritize your preferences, such as grinder type, brewing capacity, programmable features, ease of use and cleaning, and overall durability. With a well-informed decision, you can enjoy the convenience and delight of freshly ground coffee in the comfort of your home.

Hi! I’m Shawn Chun
My adventure in coffee began when I first launched my first coffee shop back in the early 2000s. I had to figure out so many things on my own and to make it worse within 2 years of opening two large corporate coffee chains moved in just blocks away from me!
As I saw smaller and even some larger coffee shops in the neighborhood slowly lose customers to these giant coffee chains and slowly close up shop, I knew that I had to start getting creative…or go out of business.
I (like you may be) knew the coffee industry well. I could make the best latte art around and the foam on my caps was the fluffiest you have ever seen. I even had the best state-of-the-art 2 group digital Nuova Simonelli machine money could buy. But I knew that these things alone would not be enough to lure customers away from the name brand established coffee shops.
Eventually, through lots of trial and error as well as perseverance and creativity I did find a way to not only survive but also thrive in the coffee/espresso industry even while those corporate coffee chains stayed put. During those years I learned to adapt and always faced new challenges. It was not always easy, however, in the end, I was the sole survivor independent coffee shop within a 10-mile radius of my location. Just two corporate coffee chains and I were left after that year. All told the corporate coffee chains took down over 15 small independent coffee shops and kiosks and I was the last one standing and thriving.
Along the years I meet others with the same passion for coffee and I quickly learned that it is not only “how good a barista is” that makes a coffee shop successful, but the business side of coffee as well.
Hence why I started this website you are on now. To provide the tools and resources for up and coming coffee shop owners to gain that vital insight and knowledge on how to start a coffee shop successfully.
Stick around, browse through my helpful blog and resources and enjoy your stay! With lots of LATTE LOVE!
