The Timeless Elegance of Chemex
Our coffee adventure sets sail with the iconic Chemex, a true gem of the old-fashioned brewing world. The brainchild of Dr. Peter Schlumbohm, born in 1941, the Chemex coffee maker seamlessly marries art and science, resulting in a visually captivating and functionally exceptional piece of coffee craftsmanship.
Its elegant hourglass shape, complemented by specially bonded filters, promises a smooth and sediment-free coffee that artfully showcases the nuanced flavors locked within your favorite coffee beans.
The Chemex’s design is a testament to simplicity and ingenuity, standing as a timeless representation of form meeting function. Its alluring hourglass silhouette not only captivates the eye but also serves a crucial purpose in the coffee-making process. The wide bottom and narrow neck promote optimal heat retention and even extraction, ensuring every drop of water works harmoniously with the coffee grounds to create a delightful brew.
The key to Chemex’s exceptional clarity and purity of flavors lies in its bonded filters. These specially designed filters are thicker and less porous than conventional filters, acting as guardians against any unwanted particles or bitterness from reaching your cup. The result is a cup of coffee that is clean, bright, and distinct, elevating the tasting experience to new heights.
As the brewing process begins, it transforms into a mesmerizing spectacle, almost like an entrancing dance between water and coffee. Upon pouring hot water over the coffee grounds, the Chemex reveals its magical charm as the water cascades gently, allowing the grounds to bloom and release their captivating aromas. The air fills with fragrant notes, inviting you to immerse yourself in the anticipation of the flavors that lie ahead.
But the Chemex experience goes beyond merely brewing coffee; it invites you on a sensory journey, touching on the profound joy of simplicity. The act of hand-pouring hot water over the coffee grounds encourages a mindful connection with the process, reminding us to slow down and appreciate the art of coffee-making as it unfolds before our eyes.
The Chemex’s ability to create a rich and flavorful brew is amplified by the precise control it offers. With a steady hand, you can regulate the pour rate and water temperature, fine-tuning each aspect to craft your ideal cup. This interplay between the brewer and the Chemex adds an element of intimacy and personalization, inviting coffee enthusiasts to express their creativity and preferences with every brew.
The Chemex brewing process is a dance of science and artistry, with each step carefully choreographed to yield the perfect cup of coffee. The time, temperature, and grind size all intertwine harmoniously to create a brew that transcends mere caffeine indulgence, transforming into a celebration of flavor and aroma that delights the senses.
As you savor each sip of coffee from the Chemex, you’ll discover a symphony of taste notes that unfold with every passing moment. The clean, smooth body lays the foundation for the nuanced flavors to shine through, allowing you to detect delicate floral undertones, fruity bursts, or nutty subtleties – depending on the origin and roast of the coffee beans.
Beyond its functional brilliance, the Chemex’s elegant appearance enhances any coffee lover’s collection. Its artful design beckons to be displayed, making it a centerpiece that adorns any coffee nook or kitchen countertop with grace and sophistication.
Cleaning the Chemex is a breeze, adding to its allure as an everyday brewing companion. The non-porous glass and simple structure ensure effortless maintenance, ensuring you can embark on your next coffee-making adventure with ease.

Hi! I’m Shawn Chun
My adventure in coffee began when I first launched my first coffee shop back in the early 2000s. I had to figure out so many things on my own and to make it worse within 2 years of opening two large corporate coffee chains moved in just blocks away from me!
As I saw smaller and even some larger coffee shops in the neighborhood slowly lose customers to these giant coffee chains and slowly close up shop, I knew that I had to start getting creative…or go out of business.
I (like you may be) knew the coffee industry well. I could make the best latte art around and the foam on my caps was the fluffiest you have ever seen. I even had the best state-of-the-art 2 group digital Nuova Simonelli machine money could buy. But I knew that these things alone would not be enough to lure customers away from the name brand established coffee shops.
Eventually, through lots of trial and error as well as perseverance and creativity I did find a way to not only survive but also thrive in the coffee/espresso industry even while those corporate coffee chains stayed put. During those years I learned to adapt and always faced new challenges. It was not always easy, however, in the end, I was the sole survivor independent coffee shop within a 10-mile radius of my location. Just two corporate coffee chains and I were left after that year. All told the corporate coffee chains took down over 15 small independent coffee shops and kiosks and I was the last one standing and thriving.
Along the years I meet others with the same passion for coffee and I quickly learned that it is not only “how good a barista is” that makes a coffee shop successful, but the business side of coffee as well.
Hence why I started this website you are on now. To provide the tools and resources for up and coming coffee shop owners to gain that vital insight and knowledge on how to start a coffee shop successfully.
Stick around, browse through my helpful blog and resources and enjoy your stay! With lots of LATTE LOVE!
