In particular, during warm weather, there is something remarkably delicious about a cold coffee that offers a smooth flavor and a reviving kick. Traditionally, coarsely ground coffee beans are steeped in cold water for a long time to create a cold brew. However, an intriguing variation on this method uses instant coffee as the primary component, providing a speedier and equally delicious replacement.
To create a refreshing cold brew using instant coffee, you should blend 1-2 tbsp of instant coffee with 1 cup of cold water, stir thoroughly, refrigerate the mixture for 12-24 hours, filter it, and adjust the strength to your preference.
In this article, we will delve into the art of making a refreshing cold brew with instant coffee, bringing you through the processes to make a wonderful and energizing brew right in your own house.
Why Choose Instant Coffee for Cold Brew?
Because it’s quick and simple to make, instant coffee is very popular among coffee lovers all over the world. This coffee powder is made from brewed coffee that has been freeze-dried or spray-dried to produce granules that easily dissolve in water. Although instant coffee is frequently associated with heated drinks, it can also be used to make cold brews.
One of the main benefits of utilizing instant coffee for cold brew is that it produces a flavor profile that is smooth and mellow, ideal for an icy coffee experience. Instant coffee’s natural qualities, which are carefully treated throughout production, help it produce a delicious cold brew. The lengthy steeping period needed for traditional cold brew using whole coffee beans is significantly reduced as instant coffee is already pre-brewed.
Due to the shorter steeping time, you can prepare and enjoy a delicious cold brew in much less time than with other cold brew techniques. With this ease, you may enjoy the same satisfyingly smooth taste of cold brews without having to sacrifice time or quality. As a result, coffee fans looking for a revitalizing iced coffee does now have a quick and delightful alternative thanks to the inventive adaption of instant coffee for cold brew.

Gather Your Ingredients and Equipment
Make sure you have all the necessary supplies and equipment on hand before starting your cold brew adventure. To use this technique, you’ll need:
- 1 to 2 tablespoons of instant coffee (adjust based on your preference for strength)
- 1 cup of cold water
- A stirring utensil (spoon or stirrer)
- A container or jar with a lid for steeping (make sure it’s large enough to hold the mixture comfortably)
- A fine mesh strainer or coffee filter
- An optional sweetener or milk for customization
Mix Instant Coffee with Cold Water
It’s time to start making your instant coffee cold brew once you have gathered all of your supplies and tools. The appropriate quantity of instant coffee granules should be measured out and placed in a suitable container, preferably one with a lid. As a general rule of thumb, a ratio of 1 to 2 tablespoons of instant coffee to 1 cup of cold water is a decent starting point. However, feel free to modify this ratio to suit your taste preferences.
The cold water should then be gently poured into the container containing the instant coffee. The addition of cold water is an essential step in the preparation of cold brew since it significantly reduces the risk of the coffee developing an excessively bitter flavor while steeping. By reducing the extraction of some components that contribute to bitterness, cold water brewing techniques, as opposed to conventional hot brewing techniques, produce a cold brew that is smoother and more delicious.
By starting with cold water, you create the foundation for a balanced and satisfying cold brew experience. A pleasant brew that tickles your taste buds with each sip is produced by steeping instant coffee in cold water for a prolonged period. This allows the flavors to develop and blend nicely. So, be cautious when adding cold water to the container, and then wait for the cold brew procedure to work its magic to create a delicious and refreshing coffee beverage.
Stir Thoroughly
Use your preferred stirring tool to fully combine the instant coffee and cold water. Carefully and precisely stir the mixture to ensure that all the coffee granules have completely dissolved, producing a smooth and homogenous mixture.
A consistent and uniform blend is necessary to provide a well-rounded and delicious cold brew flavor. Spend some time here to make sure all of the granules are dissolved, and then as the flavors combine and deepen throughout the steeping process, let the enchanting alchemy of cold brew begin.
Refrigerate for 12-24 Hours
Once the coffee mixture has been thoroughly mixed, it is time to cover the container with a tight lid and place it in the refrigerator. Beginning with this, the steeping process begins a key step that will eventually determine the flavor of your cold brew. For roughly 12 to 24 hours, leave the jar to rest in the refrigerator. This is when the entrancing flavor metamorphosis happens.
The cold water serves as a patient canvas over several hours, allowing the essence of the coffee to slowly unfold. The coffee’s distinctive flavors are released by the granules, and its multiple intricacies are carefully absorbed and embraced by the cold water. This flavor infusion results in a captivating tapestry of flavor and a cold brew that is both rich and profoundly gratifying.
The appeal of cold brew resides in its adaptability, and by experimenting, you can enhance the power and personality of your brew. If you want a strong, assertive cold brew, think about letting the steeping process go over the 24-hour mark. The extended time allows a more thorough extraction of coffee’s complex characteristics, producing a more powerful and intense flavor profile. On the other hand, if a milder and lighter cold brew suits your palate more, think about cutting the steeping time. By doing this, you have a milder extraction that has a mild yet energizing flavor.
Patience pays off in the world of cold brew, where there are countless taste combinations available. Finding your optimal brew strength and flavor profile is promised with each step of the steeping procedure. Following the completion of the steeping process, a symphony of flavors orchestrates as the coffee and water mix within the refrigerator to provide a mellow and comforting cold brew experience that is ready for your enjoyment.
Filtering the Brew
Your cold brew is now infused with a symphony of flavors as the steeping phase comes to an end and is prepared to be enhanced and improved. The cold brew is then put through a filter to make sure it is smooth and free of sediment so you can enjoy every sip without any unwelcome grittiness.
Prepare a coffee filter or a fine mesh strainer, both of which are fantastic instruments for producing a flawless cold brew, to do this. To create a smooth passage for the cold brew to flow through, place the strainer or filter over a serving pitcher, another clean container, or both.
With patience and precision to produce the best results, slowly pour the cold brew mixture through the ready filter. The fine mesh will carefully catch any coffee grounds or particles as the liquid passes through the filter, leaving them behind as the pure, refined cold brew cascades into the waiting container.
A velvety and seamless texture is guaranteed in every sip thanks to the filtering process, which assures a clear separation between the flavorful elixir and the coffee grounds. The cold brew is refined and sophisticated thanks to this important step, which also makes it a lovely pleasure to enjoy whether it’s a hot summer day or just a regular treat.
With a harmonious combination of flavors and a silky-smooth texture, the filtered cold brew now tempts. It is a testament to the skill of cold brewing with instant coffee and is ready to be served over ice or personalized with your additives. Get ready to embark on a cold coffee voyage that will tickle your taste buds and soothe your soul, demonstrating the power of basic granules to create a genuinely delightful and unforgettable experience.

Dilute and Customize to Taste
Your cold brew is now ready to tempt your taste buds after going through the laborious steeping and filtering procedure. It has been expertly made and is filled with coffee essence. You can now choose to either enjoy the cold brew as is or start a fun customizing process to make it specifically yours.
It’s important to remember that because of its prolonged steeping time, cold brew is inherently more concentrated than standard iced coffee. Consider weakening the cold brew with more cold water or milk to get the strength and flavor you desire. This step enables you to achieve the ideal balance that precisely satisfies the needs of your palate, whether they are for a powerful and intense brew or a softer, milder version.
The appeal of cold brew is found in its adaptation to your preferences and variety. Find the harmonic combination that appeals to your palate by experimenting with different ratios and the interactions between coffee, water, and milk.
It’s a delicious alternative to add sugar, honey, or any other preferred sweetener if you’re looking for a little sweetness to go with the robust coffee tones. The flavor profile of the cold brew can be improved with a subtle addition of sweetness, improving the whole experience and producing a more decadent delight.
Serve and Savor
It’s time to share your invention with the world now that your cold brew journey has culminated in a distinctive and pleasant beverage. Lifting the bottle containing your just-brewed cold coffee elixir, you feel a wave of anticipation and satisfaction.
Pour the cold brew slowly over the ice, then watch as the rich liquid cascades into the glass as the ice gradually melts to produce a cool, refreshing sensation. Coffee’s alluring aroma fills the air, tempting your senses and setting the stage for the delight that is about to come.
Think about sprinkling cocoa powder or a dash of cinnamon on top for an extra splash of decadence. These aromatic accents give your cold brew concoction a touch of elegance while also improving its flavor and aesthetic appeal.
It’s time to enjoy the moment you’ve been anxiously waiting for now that the garnish is finished. As you take your first drink, allow the cold brew’s smooth, energizing sweetness to embrace your taste receptors. Your tongue will feel refreshed and satisfied as the cold coffee caresses your palate with a symphony of flavors that dance together.
The flavors blend and develop with each subsequent sip, revealing new nuances and providing a pleasurable experience with each bite. Your senses and spirit will be revived by this drink, which combines the smooth profile of the instant coffee cold brew with the coldness of the ice.

Hi! I’m Shawn Chun
My adventure in coffee began when I first launched my first coffee shop back in the early 2000s. I had to figure out so many things on my own and to make it worse within 2 years of opening two large corporate coffee chains moved in just blocks away from me!
As I saw smaller and even some larger coffee shops in the neighborhood slowly lose customers to these giant coffee chains and slowly close up shop, I knew that I had to start getting creative…or go out of business.
I (like you may be) knew the coffee industry well. I could make the best latte art around and the foam on my caps was the fluffiest you have ever seen. I even had the best state-of-the-art 2 group digital Nuova Simonelli machine money could buy. But I knew that these things alone would not be enough to lure customers away from the name brand established coffee shops.
Eventually, through lots of trial and error as well as perseverance and creativity I did find a way to not only survive but also thrive in the coffee/espresso industry even while those corporate coffee chains stayed put. During those years I learned to adapt and always faced new challenges. It was not always easy, however, in the end, I was the sole survivor independent coffee shop within a 10-mile radius of my location. Just two corporate coffee chains and I were left after that year. All told the corporate coffee chains took down over 15 small independent coffee shops and kiosks and I was the last one standing and thriving.
Along the years I meet others with the same passion for coffee and I quickly learned that it is not only “how good a barista is” that makes a coffee shop successful, but the business side of coffee as well.
Hence why I started this website you are on now. To provide the tools and resources for up and coming coffee shop owners to gain that vital insight and knowledge on how to start a coffee shop successfully.
Stick around, browse through my helpful blog and resources and enjoy your stay! With lots of LATTE LOVE!
