- Size Matters: The capacity of the French press is a top consideration. Smaller models are perfect for solo coffee enthusiasts or couples who enjoy a few cups each day. If you frequently entertain guests or have a larger household, consider opting for a slightly larger option to accommodate more servings at once.
- Quality Materials: The materials used in the construction of the French press significantly impact both the taste of your coffee and the overall durability of the coffee maker. Investing in a well-crafted French press ensures that it remains a loyal companion in your coffee-brewing journey for years to come.
- Easy Cleanup: Coffee-making should be a pleasure, not a cumbersome task. Look for a small French press with parts that are easy to disassemble and dishwasher-safe. This ensures a quick and hassle-free cleanup process, saving you time and effort so you can enjoy your coffee without any lingering chores.
- Insulation: Busy mornings often demand multitasking, and a double-walled construction in a French press can be a game-changer. This feature offers excellent heat retention, keeping your coffee warm for an extended period. So, even if you get momentarily sidetracked, you can return to a hot, satisfying cup of coffee.
- Ergonomic Design: The pleasure of using a small French press lies in its simplicity and comfort during the brewing process. Seek out a model with an easy-to-use plunger and a handle that feels comfortable and sturdy in your hands. Tips for a Perfect Brew
No matter which small French press you select, honing the art of brewing will undoubtedly elevate your coffee experience to new heights. To achieve the perfect cup of coffee, consider these essential brewing tips:
- Use Fresh Coffee Beans: The foundation of exceptional coffee lies in high-quality, freshly roasted coffee beans. Invest in freshly sourced beans and grind them just before brewing to preserve their flavors and aromatic oils. The result will be a vibrant and captivating cup of coffee that tantalizes your taste buds.
- Grind Consistency: Pay close attention to your coffee grind. Aim for a coarse grind to prevent over-extraction, which can lead to bitter flavors. The coarser grind allows for a gentle extraction process, yielding a smoother and more delightful brew. Strike the perfect balance between extraction and flavor by experimenting with different grind settings.
- Water Temperature: Mastering the ideal water temperature is key to unlocking the full potential of your coffee grounds. Aim for water just below boiling, ideally between 195-205°F (90-96°C). Water at this temperature effectively extracts the coffee’s flavors without scalding the delicate beans, ensuring a rich and nuanced cup of coffee.
- Brewing Time: Patience is a virtue when it comes to French press brewing. Allow the coffee to steep for about 4 minutes before plunging the grounds. However, remember that brewing time is a matter of personal preference. If you prefer a bolder flavor, you may extend the steeping time slightly. On the other hand, if a milder taste suits your palate, shortening the brewing time could be the key.
- Experiment with Ratios: Finding the perfect coffee-to-water ratio is an exciting part of the brewing journey. Play with different ratios to discover the strength and flavor profile that resonates with you. The golden rule is typically around a 1:15 to 1:18 coffee-to-water ratio, but feel free to tweak it to suit your taste preferences.

Hi! I’m Shawn Chun
My adventure in coffee began when I first launched my first coffee shop back in the early 2000s. I had to figure out so many things on my own and to make it worse within 2 years of opening two large corporate coffee chains moved in just blocks away from me!
As I saw smaller and even some larger coffee shops in the neighborhood slowly lose customers to these giant coffee chains and slowly close up shop, I knew that I had to start getting creative…or go out of business.
I (like you may be) knew the coffee industry well. I could make the best latte art around and the foam on my caps was the fluffiest you have ever seen. I even had the best state-of-the-art 2 group digital Nuova Simonelli machine money could buy. But I knew that these things alone would not be enough to lure customers away from the name brand established coffee shops.
Eventually, through lots of trial and error as well as perseverance and creativity I did find a way to not only survive but also thrive in the coffee/espresso industry even while those corporate coffee chains stayed put. During those years I learned to adapt and always faced new challenges. It was not always easy, however, in the end, I was the sole survivor independent coffee shop within a 10-mile radius of my location. Just two corporate coffee chains and I were left after that year. All told the corporate coffee chains took down over 15 small independent coffee shops and kiosks and I was the last one standing and thriving.
Along the years I meet others with the same passion for coffee and I quickly learned that it is not only “how good a barista is” that makes a coffee shop successful, but the business side of coffee as well.
Hence why I started this website you are on now. To provide the tools and resources for up and coming coffee shop owners to gain that vital insight and knowledge on how to start a coffee shop successfully.
