A common occurrence, coffee spills can leave tenacious stains on upholstery if left unattended. The removal of dried coffee stains from upholstery may appear daunting, but it can be accomplished with the proper method.
To remove dried coffee stains from upholstery, you should start by blotting the excess. Mix dish soap with water and apply it to the stain, then blot with a cloth. Repeat if needed. Use a vinegar-water mix, blot again, rinse, and finally blot dry with a cloth.
In this article, we will walk you through a step-by-step procedure for removing dried coffee stains from upholstery, restoring the clean, fresh appearance of your furniture.
Blotting the Excess
The first step in removing dried coffee stains from upholstery is to act fast and wipe the excess liquid. Gently massage a clean cloth or paper towel against the stain, avoiding any rubbing motions that may distribute the coffee further into the fabric. The idea is to absorb as much liquid as possible at this initial stage so that the coffee stain does not penetrate further into the upholstery fibers.
Blotting is an important technique since it buys you time before moving on to other cleaning processes. By quickly blotting the spill, you reduce the size and severity of the stain, making it easier to deal with in the next steps. When dealing with coffee spills on upholstery, remember that time is of the essence to avoid long-term damage and keep the fabric’s clean appearance.

Mixing Dish Soap with Water
The next step in removing the stain from the upholstery is to prepare an appropriate cleaning solution after effectively blotting the extra coffee. Combine a few drops of mild dish soap and warm water in a bowl. The dish soap is essential in dissolving the coffee stain and removing it from the upholstery fibers. It’s critical to use a soft dish soap that’s free of harsh chemicals, as these could cause fabric damage.
Warm water aids in the creation of a mild yet effective cleaning solution that is safe for use on most upholstery materials. This combination functions as an effective stain remover, allowing you to target and eliminate the coffee stain without harming the quality or appearance of your upholstery. You boost your chances of effectively removing the coffee stain and restoring your upholstery to its former glory by utilizing the correct cleaning solution.
Applying the Cleaning Solution
With the prepared soapy water mixture in hand, carefully dip a clean cloth or sponge into the solution. Begin the cleaning process by gently dabbing the cloth over the coffee stain, working your way into the center from the outside edges. This procedure keeps the stain contained during the washing process and prevents it from spreading further. It is critical to avoid oversaturation while applying the cleaning solution since too much water might potentially damage the upholstery or leave water spots.
Allow the soapy water to stay on the coffee stain for a few minutes after applying it. Allowing the cleaning solution to sit on the stain does two things. For starters, it allows the soap to dissolve and loosen the coffee granules from the upholstery fibers, making the stain easier to remove. Second, it helps the cleaning solution to permeate the cloth, resulting in a deeper and more effective cleaning process. The cleaning solution works its magic during this brief period of waiting, prepping the stain for the next stage in the removal procedure.
Blotting with a Cloth
After applying the cleaning solution to the coffee stain on your upholstery, move on to the following stage in the removal process. Place a new, clean cloth over the stained area with care. As you push the cloth against the discoloration, use a delicate dabbing motion. This method efficiently removes the coffee stain from the upholstery fibers while preventing it from spreading further.
As you continue to dab the discoloration, the coffee particles will most likely move to the cloth. This is a good sign since it means the cleaning solution is breaking down the stain and allowing it to be absorbed by the cloth. Continue blotting until no more coffee residue is lifted from the fabric. It’s critical to be thorough during this phase because eradicating the coffee stain during the initial washing process will save you time and work in subsequent tries.
Repeat if Needed
When it comes to removing coffee stains that are particularly difficult to remove from upholstery, a single try may not always be sufficient. When this happens, it is necessary to summon all of the patience and tenacity you can generate to achieve the total elimination of the unattractive blemish. The procedure could need several tries, but the ultimate result will surely validate the time and energy spent on it.
A thorough strategy is required to begin removing the stain from the garment. To begin, take a clean cloth or paper towel and carefully blot the stained area, making sure not to spread the stain any further than it already is. It is best to avoid forceful rubbing because this could cause the stain to get more deeply embedded, making it much more difficult to remove.
Prepare a homemade cleaning solution by combining a gentle detergent with hot water. Apply a small amount of the mixture directly to the stain and let it work its way into the fibers of the upholstery. Then, using a brush or sponge with soft bristles, work the solution into the stained area to assist in removing the coffee particles from the cloth.
Give the area a thorough rinsing with some clean water. To eliminate any trace of detergent or coffee that may have been left behind, wet a clean cloth with water and then gently dab the affected area. Take precautions to prevent the upholstery from becoming oversaturated with water, since this could result in further issues such as the formation of mildew.
Do not be dismayed if the stain remains even after you have used all of your best efforts to remove it. It is required to repeat steps two through four an unlimited number of times until the desired results are obtained. The secret is to keep working at it and not give up until the coffee stain is completely gone from the shirt.
Vinegar-Water Mix
There is no need to feel hopeless when confronted with a coffee stain that will not go away despite repeated attempts to remove it with dish soap. Vinegar and water is a traditional natural remedy that is widely known for its efficacy in eliminating stains, and it is one of the options that should be considered as an alternate method. You may harness the power of this simple substance found around the house by placing it in a spray bottle together with water and white vinegar in a ratio of one part vinegar to two parts water. This will allow you to treat the obstinate blemish.
When the mixture of vinegar and water is ready to use, proceed with extreme caution to obtain the greatest possible result. Using a fine mist, lightly spritz the stained area, taking care not to oversaturate the upholstery. Excessive moisture can lead to other problems, such as the formation of mold or mildew, so taking this precaution is important. Vinegar will work its way into the fibers that have been discolored by coffee and will start to break down the coffee particles that are still present, making it much simpler to remove them.
To effectively remove stains, the acidity of vinegar is a key component in the procedure. Because of its natural components, it functions as an efficient cleaning agent and removes the coffee stain completely without causing any damage to the fabric. Vinegar also has the benefit of being a non-toxic and environmentally friendly alternative to many industrial cleaning chemicals, which makes it a preferred choice for individuals who are looking for a more sustainable approach.
Allow some time for the vinegar and water mixture to take effect once it has been applied to the affected area. The treated area should next be blotted gently with a clean cloth to absorb the coffee residue that has been released. There is no reason to give up hope even if the stain does not disappear, even though it can come as a pleasant surprise to see it begin to disappear sooner rather than later.
Keep in mind that different stains and textiles react in different ways, therefore it may take several attempts with this approach before the desired results are achieved. If you are patient and persistent, you will boost your chances of removing that stubborn coffee stain once and for all. Patience is the key to achievement.

Blotting Again and Rinsing
The next important stage in the stain-removal procedure requires cautious blotting and rinsing after applying the vinegar-water mixture to the coffee-stained upholstery. Apply gentle pressure to the soiled area once more with the clean towel while allowing it to absorb the vinegar-water solution. The key in this situation is to be thorough but careful. Avoid rubbing or scrubbing the fabric aggressively because doing so could damage it or spread the stain more.
The fabric will start to get damp as you keep blotting because of the moisture in the vinegar-water mixture. The objective is to want the fabric to feel damp but not soaked. This precise balance is necessary to prevent oversaturating the upholstery, as doing so could result in issues like discoloration or damage to the cushioning underneath.
Rinsing the area is the next step in the procedure. Lightly dab the soiled area with a different clean cloth after dipping it in clean water. Any remaining vinegar residue on the upholstery is removed by the rinsing process. This is crucial because, even though vinegar is a great stain remover, leaving too much residue on the cloth may create an offensive odor to stay.
Any leftover vinegar and coffee residue should be lifted away with a light dabbing motion during rinsing, rather than being pushed deeper into the cloth. Check the area closely to see if the coffee stain has lessened or disappeared totally. At this point, the stain might appear to be significantly lighter or even completely gone, but if some traces still exist, don’t give up. To get the ideal result, you might need to blot and rinse multiple times.
Blot Dry with a Cloth
The final stage in the coffee stain removal technique is to fully dry the treated upholstery. After finishing the blotting and washing processes, gently press a dry, clean towel into the treated area to absorb any excess moisture. This procedure is critical in preventing the growth of mold or mildew since moisture trapped within the fabric can create an environment favorable to the growth of these unwanted elements.
The delicate blotting action with the dry cloth guarantees that no additional substances are introduced into the fabric while taking out any remaining moisture. Be patient during this phase, since removing extra moisture properly is critical to the overall achievement of the stain removal process.
Consider using additional aids such as a fan or open windows to speed up the drying process. Proper air circulation promotes faster evaporation, allowing the upholstery to dry faster. Placing a fan nearby or strategically opening windows in the room can help the flow of fresh air and aid in moisture evaporation.
Excessive heat or high-speed drying methods, such as hair dryers, should be avoided since they might cause the fabric to shrink, warp, or get damaged. Instead, use natural drying methods that are kind on the upholstery.
Maintain vigilance over the drying process to ensure that no moisture remains within the fabric. Drying durations may vary depending on the environment and humidity levels, so be patient until the upholstery is completely dry to the touch.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can bleach be used to remove coffee stains from upholstery?
It is not advisable to use bleach to remove coffee stains from upholstery. Bleach is a strong chemical that can cause discoloration and fabric damage. Instead, use gentle cleaning methods such as a mixture of dish soap and water or a vinegar-water solution, which are both safer at removing coffee stains.
What if the coffee stain on my furniture is old and difficult to remove?
Getting rid of old and stubborn coffee stains takes perseverance and patience. Blot off any extra coffee before applying a mixture of dish soap and water. If necessary, repeat the process numerous times. If the discoloration persists, use a vinegar-water mixture to dissolve the stubborn particles. Make sure to properly rinse and let the upholstery dry completely between efforts.
Can I remove coffee stains from upholstery using a steam cleaner?
Using a steam cleaner on upholstery can be dangerous since it can harm certain types of materials. Steam can permanently solidify coffee stains, making them much more difficult to remove. Steam cleaning should be avoided unless your upholstery care instructions specifically allow it. For most upholstery textiles, use moderate cleaning procedures such as blotting with cleaning solutions and water.

Hi! I’m Shawn Chun
My adventure in coffee began when I first launched my first coffee shop back in the early 2000s. I had to figure out so many things on my own and to make it worse within 2 years of opening two large corporate coffee chains moved in just blocks away from me!
As I saw smaller and even some larger coffee shops in the neighborhood slowly lose customers to these giant coffee chains and slowly close up shop, I knew that I had to start getting creative…or go out of business.
I (like you may be) knew the coffee industry well. I could make the best latte art around and the foam on my caps was the fluffiest you have ever seen. I even had the best state-of-the-art 2 group digital Nuova Simonelli machine money could buy. But I knew that these things alone would not be enough to lure customers away from the name brand established coffee shops.
Eventually, through lots of trial and error as well as perseverance and creativity I did find a way to not only survive but also thrive in the coffee/espresso industry even while those corporate coffee chains stayed put. During those years I learned to adapt and always faced new challenges. It was not always easy, however, in the end, I was the sole survivor independent coffee shop within a 10-mile radius of my location. Just two corporate coffee chains and I were left after that year. All told the corporate coffee chains took down over 15 small independent coffee shops and kiosks and I was the last one standing and thriving.
Along the years I meet others with the same passion for coffee and I quickly learned that it is not only “how good a barista is” that makes a coffee shop successful, but the business side of coffee as well.
Hence why I started this website you are on now. To provide the tools and resources for up and coming coffee shop owners to gain that vital insight and knowledge on how to start a coffee shop successfully.
Stick around, browse through my helpful blog and resources and enjoy your stay! With lots of LATTE LOVE!
